The White Russian is a twist on its predecessor, the Black Russian (5:2 vodka:coffee liqueur). The Black Russian is a signature drink designed for Perle Mesta, the American ambassador to Luxembourg, while he was hanging out at a bar at the Hotel Metropole, Brussels, in 1949.
Cream was added to the Black Russian sometime during the cold war period in the 50s or 60s to refine its taste, creating the White Russian. Think of the White Russian as the cappuccino of the vodka/coffee liqueur world. It was first mentioned as a cocktail in 1965 in the San Francisco Bay Area (Oakland Tribune on November 21, 1965). With a bit of arrogance, we can embrace it as our local cocktail; although its popularity is due to the Dude from the movie Big Lebowski. The White Russian was the Dude’s beverage of choice.
While a White Russian is amazing as is, I somehow miss a coffee experience. That is why I add a shot of espresso to take it to the next level – Espresso White Russian. You can try to add ultra-strong coffee, if you do not have espresso available. I guarantee you will shine at any party with this recipe!
Try the Farm Blend or Red Catucai if you use Unleashed Coffee. They will live up to this amazing cocktail.
